Solo in Lisbon: A Love Letter to Traveling Alone at 55

For years, my vacations were logistics exercises — everyone else's meals, everyone else's museums, everyone else's pace. So when I boarded a flight to Lisbon with nothing but a carry-on and a novel, it felt less like a trip and more like a homecoming.

Traveling solo at this age is a particular luxury. You already know who you are. You stop for the pastel de nata without asking anyone. You linger in the tile museum for two hours because it moves you. You take the afternoon nap without apology.

Lisbon rewards this kind of traveler. The city is walkable, golden-lit, and gracious to women dining alone — a table for one with a glass of vinho verde is a pleasure, not a pity.

Practical notes: stay in Baixa or Príncipe Real for beauty and safety, pack linen and one silk scarf for evening, and learn three words of Portuguese — obrigada opens every door.

If you have spent decades arranging everyone else's adventures, consider this your invitation. The window seat is yours.

You spent a lifetime caring for everyone else.
