The Morning Ritual That Gave Me Back My Mornings

For three decades, my first waking thought was a list — lunches, permission slips, deadlines, someone else's emergency. The morning was a starting gun. Maybe yours was too.

So I built a ritual with one rule: the first hour belongs to me. No phone. No news. No one else's urgency.

It is simple by design. Ten minutes of stillness — meditation, or simply sitting with tea while the light comes in. Ten minutes of movement, gentle and unhurried. Ten minutes of writing: three lines of gratitude, one intention for the day.

What surprised me was not the calm — it was the clarity. Decisions came easier. The day felt chosen rather than inherited.

You have spent a lifetime being the first responder for the people you love. Let the morning be the one appointment you keep with yourself.

You spent a lifetime caring for everyone else.
